Every coin has fine designs that were hand-struck in high relief. While the artistic style of the designs changed over the years, the subjects did not. The obverse depicts the face of the city’s patron goddess, Athena. What earned this coin its nickname, however, was its reverse design that depicted the symbol of Athena – the owl. According to the Ancient Greek historian, Philochorus, this Athenian Owl Tetradrachm was known to the Greeks as a glaux, or ”little owl.”
